Job Focus
As Deputy Headteacher you will lead an experienced and well-resourced area of the academy in ensuring that our highest standards are achieved by all. You will also be the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the Academy, supported by a full-time Operational Safeguarding Lead and Deputy.

As a member of the Academy’s Senior Leadership Team, the Deputy Headteacher will play a key role in ensuring that the Academy’s Christian ethos is successfully promoted and adhered to throughout every aspect of the Academy. This will involve engaging in the monitoring and evaluation systems established to ensure the Academy fulfils its vision and mission objectives.
Core Responsibilities & Tasks
- Provide strategic direction for behaviour and attitudes within the organisation.
- Serve as the designated attendance lead, ensuring optimal attendance rates.
- Act as the Designated Senior Person for safeguarding, child protection, and prevent duty.
- Oversee the welfare and support of Looked After Children.
- Lead the EVC (Educational Visits Coordinator) and manage the Evolve system.
- Facilitate engagement with multiple agencies to support student welfare.
- Conduct the 175 annual audit to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
- Serve as the link for Section 19 and social inclusion initiatives.
- Oversee the process and strategy for managed moves.
- Manage allocations under the Fair Access Protocol.
- Develop and implement strategies to prevent and address bullying.
- Manage policies and procedures related to suspensions and exclusions.
- Lead strategic initiatives for alternative provision and off-site education.
- Coordinate Governor Behaviour Panels and Team Around the Child meetings (SEN/Pastoral/Inclusion).
- Oversee the rewards system to motivate and recognise student achievements.
- Act as the senior mental health lead, promoting mental health initiatives.
- Provide strategic leadership for Personal and Professional Development (PPD).
- Monitor and report on Governors’ Key Performance Indicators.
- Provide professional operational leadership and day to day management for the Academy in partnership with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to ensure that the vision, values and strategic leadership are strong.
- Assist the Headteacher in the leadership and management of the Academy and all areas of improvement, including responsibility for the Academy in the absence of the Headteacher.
- Take responsibility for leading and managing significant areas of the Academy, under the Headteacher’s direction.
- Monitor and evaluate the implementation of policies.
- Manage staff and resources.
- Provide leadership to ensure high-quality education for all, and improved standards of learning and achievement.
- Make a very positive contribution to the development of the Academy improvement plan.
- Contribute to the monitoring, review, and evaluation of the Academy’s performance.
- Have high expectations of student attendance and punctuality
- Provide a safe, calm and well-ordered environment for all students and staff, focusing on developing their exemplary behaviour in school and in the wider community. Ensure that this focus permeates the ethos of the school in everything that we do
- Promote a culture where students are confident, self-assured learners with excellent attitudes to learning which has a strong and positive impact on their progress and where they are proud of their achievements
- Promote high levels of student engagement so that students are well prepared for the next stage in their education, training or employment
- Promote positive strategies for challenging prejudice and to prevent bullying, use of derogatory language or aggressive language
- Work with the Headteacher to secure and sustain an effective quality of education throughout the school and to monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupils’ achievement, using benchmarks and setting targets for improvement.
Personal and professional development
- Keep up to date with new research and current practise, utilising national bodies such as DFE, Ofsted, NCSL, SSAT and others to support Academy based programmes.
- Keep up to date with national developments in teaching practise and methodology.
- Regularly review own practise, set personal targets and take responsibility for own personal development.
- Manage own work load and that of others to allow an appropriate work / life balance.
