Vertical Recruitment is working with a highly regarded multidisciplinary engineering consultancy looking to appoint an Associate or Associate Director in Electrical Building Services to lead its electrical engineering team in Liverpool.

The business has a strong reputation for delivering technically challenging, high-profile projects across the built environment. Its work spans major healthcare developments, aviation, data centres, commercial buildings and large-scale infrastructure, often involving complex engineering requirements and multidisciplinary design teams.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Electrical Engineer who enjoys leading people, working closely with clients and remaining involved in the technical side of engineering.

One of the real attractions is the working environment. The consultancy places a strong emphasis on work-life balance, with well-managed projects, realistic workloads and a flexible approach to working. Hybrid arrangements typically involve around two days per week in the office, giving people the flexibility to manage their working week around project and team commitments.

For someone looking for the scale and variety of major projects, while maintaining a good balance outside of work, this could be an interesting opportunity.

The Role

You'll take a leading position within the Liverpool Building Engineering team, with responsibility for the electrical discipline across a varied portfolio of projects.

The role combines technical leadership, project oversight, client relationships and team development. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, architects and other specialists, contributing to major projects while helping to shape the continued development of the electrical team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and developing the Electrical Building Services team in Liverpool, providing technical direction, mentoring and support.

  • Overseeing the electrical design and delivery of major multidisciplinary projects, from early concept through to construction and completion.

  • Providing senior technical input across electrical building services, ensuring designs meet project requirements, quality standards and sustainability objectives.

  • Working closely with clients, architects and wider engineering disciplines to develop coordinated design solutions.

  • Managing project resources, programmes and commercial performance, ensuring work is appropriately planned and delivered.

  • Supporting engineers at different stages of their careers, encouraging technical development and professional progression.

  • Building and maintaining client relationships, contributing to repeat business and new project opportunities.

  • Working alongside the wider leadership team to support the continued development of the Liverpool electrical engineering team.

Although this is a leadership position, there is still plenty of opportunity to remain involved in engineering design, technical decisions and the delivery of significant projects.

Project Exposure

One of the main attractions of this opportunity is the breadth and scale of work.

The consultancy is involved in major projects across healthcare, aviation, data centres, commercial development, education and wider infrastructure, offering exposure to a range of technically complex buildings and environments.

Projects range from large-scale new developments to specialist facilities with demanding electrical infrastructure, resilience, sustainability and operational requirements.

You'll have the opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams on projects that offer genuine technical variety, rather than being limited to one particular sector or building type.

About You

We're interested in speaking with experienced Electrical Building Services Engineers who are comfortable taking a leading role in project delivery and supporting the development of a team.

You may already be operating at Associate or Associate Director level, or be an established Principal Engineer ready to take on broader leadership responsibility.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer status through IET, CIBSE or another relevant professional institution.

  • Significant experience in electrical building services design within a consultancy environment.

  • A strong technical background across electrical systems, design coordination and multidisciplinary project delivery.

  • Experience leading substantial projects or electrical engineering workstreams, ideally across complex or large-scale developments.

  • Confidence managing and developing engineers, providing technical guidance and overseeing design quality.

  • Strong client-facing experience and the ability to build effective working relationships with project stakeholders.

  • Good commercial awareness, including project planning, resources, fees and delivery responsibilities.

  • An interest in sustainable building design, digital engineering and the continued development of engineering practices.

Experience across healthcare, data centres, aviation or other technically demanding sectors would be particularly relevant, although the business is open to engineers from different building services backgrounds.

What's on Offer?

Alongside the opportunity to lead an established team and work on major projects, the consultancy offers a working environment that places genuine importance on flexibility, collaboration and professional development.

The package and benefits include:

  • Competitive salary, dependent on experience and level of appointment.

  • Hybrid working, typically around two days per week in the Liverpool office.

  • A strong emphasis on work-life balance, supported by structured project management and sensible workload planning.

  • Exposure to prestigious, large-scale projects across a broad range of sectors.

  • The opportunity to lead and develop an established electrical engineering team.

  • A comprehensive benefits package.

  • Continued professional development and opportunities for longer-term progression.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Electrical Engineer looking for greater influence over projects, people and technical delivery, while maintaining a healthy balance outside of work.

It offers the scale and variety of projects associated with an established multidisciplinary consultancy, alongside a collaborative working culture and a flexible approach to how people work.
