Technical Business Analyst – 6-Month Contract

Day rate: £450 per day, outside IR35

Contract length: 6 months

Location: Liverpool - hybrid, with two days per week in the office

Start date: ASAP

About the role

Innova Recruitment is working with Not-For-Profit organisation to appoint a Technical Business Analyst for a key programme of continuous improvement across its payments platform.

The platform has recently reached MVP and is now being used to onboard new clients. The next phase is focused on reviewing, clarifying and prioritising enhancement requests so that the platform continues to develop as a standardised, effective service.

This is not a migration-focused role. You will work at the point where business need meets technical delivery: engaging stakeholders, getting beneath the initial request, defining the problem and desired outcome, and producing the detail developers need to deliver valuable changes.

The opportunity

You will take ownership of an existing backlog of enhancement requests, working with operational stakeholders, product and technical colleagues to establish the right requirements, priorities and delivery approach.

The role will involve understanding the current process, shaping future-state ways of working, assessing the value and impact of proposed changes, and ensuring tickets are sufficiently detailed for development and testing. You will work closely with developers and a Solution Architect within a collaborative delivery environment.

The organisation uses a bespoke version of the Appian platform. Previous Appian experience is useful but not essential; the priority is strong technical business analysis capability and confidence working with software delivery teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Engage with business stakeholders to understand enhancement requests, operational challenges and underlying business needs.
  • Map and document current-state and future-state processes, including business rules, dependencies, exceptions and impacts.
  • Challenge requests constructively to establish the rationale, business value, affected users and consequences of not making a change.
  • Identify the appropriate stakeholders and subject-matter experts needed to clarify requirements.
  • Review, refine and help prioritise enhancement tickets against business benefit, impact and the wider standardised service offering.
  • Translate business needs into clear, developer-ready requirements, including user stories, acceptance criteria and supporting detail.
  • Create straightforward wireframes or screen mock-ups to illustrate proposed layouts, fields and user journeys.
  • Work directly with developers to clarify requirements throughout delivery and support testing activity.
  • Help ensure delivered changes address the agreed problem and meet stakeholder needs.
  • Contribute to related analysis activity where priorities require, including potential work connected to the charity database.

What we are looking for

  • Proven experience as a Business Analyst or Technical Business Analyst in a software development or product delivery environment.
  • Experience working directly with developers and an understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong stakeholder-engagement skills, with the confidence to ask probing questions, listen carefully and challenge constructively.
  • Ability to understand business problems, assess the impact of proposed changes and distinguish between individual client needs and changes that benefit the wider service.
  • Experience documenting as-is and to-be processes, functional requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requests into clear, actionable work for technical teams.
  • Experience managing or contributing to an enhancement backlog and supporting prioritisation.
  • Ability to produce basic wireframes or screen mock-ups using Miro or a similar tool; advanced UI design or Figma expertise is not required.
  • A proactive, commercially minded approach; this role needs someone who can add judgement and value, rather than simply record requests.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, good organisational skills and the ability to work independently.

Desirable experience

  • Experience of bespoke platforms built around specific business or operational needs.
  • Exposure to payments, payroll, transaction processing or related operational processes.
  • Experience of low-code workflow or case-management platforms, including Appian.
  • Experience working with a Solution Architect, Product Owner or similar technical and product stakeholders.

Working arrangement

This is a hybrid contract based in Liverpool, with two days per week in the office and the remainder worked remotely. Office attendance is important for effective stakeholder engagement and collaboration; Tuesday is commonly used by the team, with flexibility around the specific days.

Additional information

The successful candidate will be required to complete a DBS check due to the nature of the payroll-related work.

The initial contract is expected to run for six months. The organisation is looking to interview suitable candidates promptly, with a view to an ASAP start.
