Assistant Accountant

Liverpool | £30,000 - £35,000 | Permanent | Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

A well-established and growing Liverpool-based business is seeking an experienced Assistant Accountant to join its Accounts Department.

This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional who enjoys working beyond transactional accounting. Acting as the No.2 within the department, you'll support the Accounts Department Lead while taking ownership of management reporting, reconciliations, investigations and financial problem-solving.

We're looking for someone with strong accounting experience, advanced Excel skills and a naturally analytical approach. This role will suit an individual who enjoys investigating discrepancies, identifying root causes and improving financial processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts and supporting analysis.
• Produce routine and ad hoc financial and management reports.
• Complete and review bank, customer, supplier, nominal and control account reconciliations.
• Investigate variances, unusual transactions and discrepancies, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
• Analyse financial data, reports and audit trails to resolve accounting and systems-related issues.
• Respond to management queries with clear and accurate financial information.
• Support year-end processes and data integrity checks.
• Create and manage purchase orders.
• Handle import/export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists and customs paperwork.
• Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes and controls.
• Provide support and cover for the Accounts Department Lead where required.

Person Specification

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant, Senior Accounts Assistant or similar finance role.
• Experience preparing monthly management accounts.
• Strong reconciliation and investigative skills.
• Advanced Excel skills, including:
  
  • Pivot Tables
  • XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP
  • SUMIFS
  • Data manipulation and reporting
  • Financial analysis
• Experience using accounting software and reporting systems.
• Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
• The ability to identify, investigate and resolve issues independently.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to present findings to management.

Desirable Experience

• AAT Qualified, part-qualified or qualified by experience.
• ERP system experience.
• Import/export documentation experience.
• Experience with stock, e-commerce or payment systems.
