The Opportunity
Standard 8 are working with an established Liverpool-based law firm looking to recruit experienced Housing Disrepair Fee Earners and qualified Solicitors to join its litigation team.
You do not need to be a qualified Solicitor to apply. The firm is interested in speaking with experienced Housing Disrepair Paralegals, Fee Earners, Litigation Executives and qualified Solicitors, from newly qualified through to experienced practitioners.
There are opportunities at different levels, with salaries reflecting your experience and qualifications:
- Housing Disrepair Fee Earners / Paralegals: £27,000–£35,000
- Qualified Housing Disrepair Solicitors: Up to £55,000
The firm has an established claimant litigation practice, handling Housing Disrepair claims against local authorities, housing associations and other landlords.
You'll be joining a team with experience in this area, managing claims involving poor housing conditions, disrepair and landlords' repairing obligations.
For experienced Fee Earners, there's the opportunity to manage your own caseload and continue developing your litigation experience. Qualified Solicitors can take on more complex matters, with responsibility reflecting their experience.
The Role
You'll be handling claimant Housing Disrepair matters, progressing cases from initial instructions through to settlement or litigation where required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing a caseload of Housing Disrepair claims at pre-action and litigation stages.
- Handling cases involving damp, mould, leaks, defective heating, structural issues and other housing condition problems.
- Assessing liability, quantum and the merits of individual claims.
- Reviewing surveyors' reports, tenancy agreements, medical evidence and supporting documentation.
- Preparing Letters of Claim, witness statements, pleadings and settlement documentation.
- Liaising with local authorities, housing associations, landlords and their legal representatives.
- Negotiating settlements, including compensation and agreed remedial works.
- Progressing litigated matters and preparing cases for hearings where appropriate.
- Managing court deadlines, case progression and client communication.
- Providing clients with clear advice and regular updates throughout their claims.
The level of responsibility will depend on your experience, with support available for those developing their litigation skills.
What We're Looking For
Previous Housing Disrepair experience is the main requirement. Formal solicitor qualification is not essential.
We're particularly interested in candidates with experience working as:
- Housing Disrepair Fee Earners.
- Housing Disrepair Paralegals managing their own caseload.
- Litigation Executives specialising in Housing Disrepair.
- Newly Qualified Solicitors with relevant Housing Disrepair experience.
- Experienced Housing Disrepair Solicitors.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- Practical experience handling claimant Housing Disrepair matters.
- An understanding of Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 and relevant housing legislation.
- Familiarity with the Pre-Action Protocol for Housing Conditions Claims and the Civil Procedure Rules.
- Experience reviewing surveyors' reports and assessing evidence.
- Good drafting skills, including Letters of Claim and witness statements.
- Confidence negotiating settlements and communicating with defendants.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines.
- A professional, approachable manner when dealing with clients.
Experience using Eclipse Proclaim would be advantageous but isn't essential.
